The Retail Business Platform team at Albert Heijn is looking for a skilled Data Engineer to help build and optimize dataflows in a modern, cutting - edge technology landscape (Azure, Microservices, Databricks). You’ll play a key role in a complex domain that supports critical applications relying on data integration, transformation, and analytics. This is a hands-on engineering role where you’ll contribute to the development of scalable data pipelines, improve data quality, and support the evolution of our custom-built data platform. You’ll work in one of our focused squads - Integrations, Datamarts, or Transformation - collaborating with experienced engineers and product owners to deliver impactful data solutions that help reinvent food retail in the Netherlands

As a Data Engineer in Retail Business Platform, you’ll contribute to the development and optimization of scalable data solutions that support our business operations and customer experiences. You’ll work alongside senior engineers, architect, and product owner to deliver high-quality data pipelines and platforms that power analytics, reporting, and decision-making.

Your new team and office

You’ll be part of a single data engineering team organized into three specialized squads, each consisting of 2 - 4 engineers and working closely with a product owner:

  • Integrations Squad
    Focused on maintaining and evolving various patterns for ingesting data from internal systems and external partners. This squad ensures seamless integration of partner data into the data platform, supporting both batch and streaming use cases
  • Datamarts Squad
    Responsible for designing and building scalable, high-quality data marts that support analytics, reporting, and business intelligence. This squad ensures data is modeled and served in a way that meets the needs of decision-makers across the organization
  • Transformation Squad
    Dedicated to maintaining and modernizing legacy data systems. This squad ensures smooth transitions to the new platform by refactoring outdated workflows, improving reliability, and aligning legacy systems with current architectural standards

You’ll report to the Engineering Manager and collaborate with senior engineers who provide technical leadership and mentorship across squads.


Key Responsibilities:

 

Technical Execution:

  • Build and maintain data pipelines and data marts using Azure and Databricks
  • Ensure data quality through validation, monitoring, and error-handling mechanisms
  • Collaborate on the implementation of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices
  • Participate in code reviews, testing, and documentation to ensure maintainability and reliability
Platform Contribution:
  • Support the evolution of the data platform by contributing to architectural improvements and performance tuning
  • Assist in integrating new tools and technologies to enhance data workflows
  • Help troubleshoot and resolve data-related issues in production environments
Collaboration & Growth:

  • Work closely with product owner, analysts, and business stakeholders to understand data requirements
  • Learn from senior engineers and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement
  • Take ownership of smaller projects and contribute to larger initiatives under guidance

  • Pipeline Stability: Reduction in pipeline failures and improved recovery time
  • Data Quality: Fewer data inconsistencies and improved validation coverage
  • Delivery Efficiency: Timely delivery of assigned tasks and contributions to team goals
  • Skill Growth: Demonstrated improvement in technical capabilities and autonomy

 

The recipe for maximum impact:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or a related field
  • 2 - 4 years of experience in data engineering or software development
  • Hands-on experience with:
    • Cloud Platforms: Azure (Data Factory, Data Lake)
    • Big Data Tools: Databricks
    • Programming Languages: Python, SQL
    • Workflow Orchestration: Azure Data Factory
    • Monitoring & Logging: Azure Monitor, basic observability tools
  • Understanding of data modeling and ETL best practices
  • Exposure to real-time data processing (e.g., Kafka, Event Hubs)
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Pulumi)
  • Experience working in Agile teams
